We all like to look our best for a night out, whether that means taking 5 hours out of the day to get your contour showing just the right amount of light and shade or taking a last-minute trip to boots for a lipstick colour to match your going-out bag. But if you’re like me, then even though you may sacrifice a lot of time and money to shimmer and shine on a night out, one thing you wouldn’t want to sacrifice is an innocent animal to test these cosmetics on, especially when there are so many make-up brands who put Kelly the kitten first.

Here’s a handy guide to help you spot who is really cruelty-free!

Yay! You’ll be pleased to hear that you can carry on using your NAKED eyeshadow palette with no remorse as they are in fact a cruelty-free make-up brand. Dreams do come true! Urban decay also provides vegan products which they guarantee don't contain any animal-derived ingredients. That’s got to give them some brownie points for sure! Though the American cosmetics brand is committed to not testing on animals, its parent company L'Oréal, is not committed to the same values and does in fact test on animals. So don’t get confused.
I’m sorry to say that if you’re committed to using make-up that hasn’t been tested on animals, then you’re going to have to wipe your shelf clear of all your Estée Lauder products. I know, it hurts, but it hurts the animals a lot more, have that in mind! Unfortunately, because they sell their products on the Chinese market where animal testing is legally required, they are not cruelty-free. But hey ho, at least you got to keep your Urban Decay products. And now you know, you can put on your make-up guilt-free.

If there ever was proof that animal testing within cosmetics is unnecessary, it’s got to be The Body Shop. Yes, they are again cruelty-free, yet their make-up is just as good as some of the high-end brands who do test on animals. They, like Urban Decay, have a vegan range and their entire range of make-up brushes are vegan-friendly. Again though, they are a subsidiary brand of L'Oréal who aren’t cruelty-free. Come on L'Oréal, let’s get with the times!
I know what you’re thinking. Don’t say it. Please don’t say it. But, sorry… I have to say it. No, MAC are still testing on animals. You’d think that being one of the most popular make-up brands around, they would be cruelty-free, but unfortunately, again due to selling their products on the Chinese market, they are not. China please, stop doing this to us. If you’re committed to having a cruelty free dressing table, you’re going to have to swipe those into the bin too. But don’t worry, all is not lost.
So here we are again, another make-up brand owned by L'Oréal who are cruelty-free. Get the prosecco out, we have something to celebrate! NYX is a very reasonably-priced, good-quality make-up brand and you can use it to your hearts content without having to avoid making eye contact with your cat. This guilt-free cosmetics brand could save the day after having to get rid of your MAC products, so thanks L'Oréal, at least your supplying us with cruelty-free alternatives.

So if you’re wanting to go completely cruelty free, then you are going to have to avoid some of the big brands but there are so many amazing cosmetic brands to keep you standing out on a night around the town.
